Charlotte Observer | IRL needs U.S. presence in cars

Just a mention of AAO in an article about car racing:

...American fans are notoriously provincial. Remember Apolo Ohno, the sensation in the 2002 Olympics in short-track speed skating? If Ohno had been from Japan, neither he nor his sport would have been a blip on the U.S. radar.

ISU Congress Wrapup

The ISU Congress concluded today in the Netherlands. It seems we're doomed to disappointment, as no new speed skating news has been forthcoming.

The following summarizes everything relevant to short track that has been announced -- most of it reported previously:

ISU restructuring changes
-- Technical Committees (for Figure Skating, Ice Dancing, Synchronized Skating, Speed Skating and Short Track) will consist of six people of whom four will be elected and two appointed. The appointed members will be a coach and a skater. Skaters and coaches will participate in Technical Committee activities immediately but only in an advisory capacity until the new Constitution takes effect in 2006.
-- A new Disciplinary Commission of 5 people was elected on 11 June to hear charges of disciplinary or ethical offences, including doping offences. The disciplinary function is therefore removed from the ISU Council with immediate effect.

Short Track
The Speed Skating section agreed to modify the qualification system for Short Track skaters for the Olympic Winter Games. For the 2006 Games two of the four ISU World Cup Short Track competitions will be designated as qualifying events.

The Congress acknowledged the substantial progress in the area of sponsorship and television in this exciting discipline.

That's it! No word on who the five people elected to the new disciplinary committee are. Surely decisions were made on the various proposals introduced, but we can only guess as to what those decisions were. I suppose it's safe to assume that the ISU didn't adopt Italy's proposal to shorten the short track ice surface from 111 to 100 meters. But who knows?

Seattle Post-Intelligencer | Seattle sports festival planned

A major international athletics competition -- modeled after the Goodwill Games held [in Seattle] in 1990 -- is scheduled for Seattle next June, with plans for similar events in the following two years.

The athletic events being planned include track and field, archery, diving, table tennis, badminton and also short-track speedskating -- an Olympic winter sport -- which would be expected to feature gold-medalist Apolo Anton Ohno of Seattle.

SoCal Speedskating needs help to save their coach!

The SoCal Speedskating club, which has produced skaters like Rusty Smith, Maria Garcia (and many other up and comers) has lost funding for coach Wilma Boomstra:

Recently, we were unable to acquire a new grant from the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles, which helps keep our youth on ice. These grants played an integral part in helping many of skaters advance to the Olympic Team (Rusty Smith), World Team (Rusty, Maria Garcia, Misi Toth) and Jr. World Teams (Rusty, Maria, Jade Wheeler, Lezleigh Jaworski, and Alice Kim).

This past season, we were unable to submit a grant request again, which helps us keep Wilma Boomstra [as our Coach]. We are not able to submit a new proposal until early fall. Hence, we've run out of funds to pay for Wilma. So far, we've done See's Candy Sales, a bake sale, Carl's Jr. coupon sales, and this weekend, a bike-a-thon.

[Our fundraising efforts are] all internal. Where our children are concerned, we parents do what we can.

If there is anyway we can be helped, we'd ALL appreciate it.

Any donations made to the SCSSA are tax deductible. Our tax I.D. number is listed at our website: socalspeedskating.org

I thank you very much for your interest and any other wonderful ideas you can come up with. We need all the help we can get.

Thank you. Sylvia Wheeler

ISU Congress Update

Loads of news regarding figure skating has been released after Day 4 of the ISU Congress. Very little information about short track is trickling out however. Thus far, only this:

Short Track: The Speed Skating section agreed to modify the qualification system for Short Track skaters for the Olympic Winter Games. For the 2006 Games two of the four ISU World Cup Short Track competitions will be designated as qualifying events.via ISU.org

I am not aware of what is being changed however since I'm unfamiliar with previous rules regarding qualifying for the Olympic Games. I believe this may mean that World Cup results will be used instead of holding a separate Olympic qualifying event. Of course, this would be separate from the invididual countries' Olympic trials, which are run by individual federations, but again, I am unsure of the specifics.

Interview with ISU President Ottavio Cinquanta

A Dutch news site has posted an interview with ISU President Ottavio Cinquanta, as part of its coverage of the ISU's 50th Congress, taking place this week in the Netherlands. While most of the interview deals with reforms proposed for figure skating and long track, one crucial question was asked regarding short track:

Q: During the [2004 World Short Track Championships] in Gothenburg there were a number of serious crashes. Did that worry you at all? And do you think that perhaps the rules of short track should be adapted.

Cinquanta: I am happy with the way that short track is developing as a sport. It gives the countries without a 400m track an opportunity to get involved in skating. On the other hand participating in certain sports also means that you are taking risks, like in skiing, cycling and boxing for example. But we are certainly paying maximum attention to the safety in short track.

It's disappointing that Cinquanta apparently ignored the question!
