Apolo was on GDLA this morning. He was very cute! :D HE TALKED ABOUT SANJAYA!!! They have dressing rooms across from each other he said. He also said he could do 2 more Olympics, if he wanted!!

There are 2 video clips on the site; a pt. 1 and pt. 2.

My worst nightmare

The TMZ-ification of Apolo has begun! It was inevitable, I s'pose. In this clip you can see he's all 'WTF?' as the camera follows him and Stacy Keibler around LA. I don't blame him. At least they sound semi-respectful, but leave AAO alone, paparazzi! Nice job playing it cool though, Apolo.

Plus, I mean, it's all a big bandwagon. You're 5 years behind the AAO curve, TMZ. Even though you yourself are only a year old.

I really debate whether to even post this stuff, but it's useless to pretend it's not out there. So, is it short track season yet?

'Everything I do in speedskating is what you don't do in ballroom'

More DWTS watch!

[updates]
San Francisco Chronicle: "Skates to slippers: Considering the grace he brings to his sport, it seems natural that Olympic short track speed skater Apolo Ohno will give the reality show "Dancing with the Stars'' a go. He'll partner with pro dancer Juliane Hough, 18, when the series returns March 18."

Sports Illustrated: "Apollo Anton Ohno: Seems his 15 minutes passed a while ago, doesn't it? But if I have to pick an athlete, it's Ohno over Laila Ali and Clyde Drexler. The ladies tell me he's quite the looker, which is, like, good for ratings and all."

Apolo: 'People like Julieanne make it seem really easy - and it's not'
Julieanne: 'Apolo's doing so good, let me just say that right now.'

More contestant interviews via AOL TV.

Sue spotted another piece, this one from People magazine:

MSNBC | Sizing up this season's ‘Dancing With the Stars’ participants

Apolo Anton Ohno, who was a hot ticket a few years ago as an Olympian, seems like he should be a good bet. Speed skating would appear to involve lightness and balance. But will his athletic ability translate into dancing? It's hard to say. Not the typical giant, bulky athlete the show has favored in the past, Ohno is the compact, wiry sort of athlete, and if nothing else, we can all just watch that soul patch.

And ignoring the jab at speedskating, I love this column just for its intro:

Orlando Weekly | i♥television™

"Dancing with the Stars is returning for another season this week—and this time it's going to be a bona fide marijuana freakout!"

Video clip: Apolo's 9 lap time trial in Cleveland

Thanks to Tod for making this available to us! Jordan Malone and Apolo Ohno were paired together for their TT, though you don't see Jordan in this clip. The gasps you hear just after the gun are due to Jordan's fall at the start. As I understand it, he basically did a face plant but recovered well enough to come in 2nd overall in the TT.

You'll also see where Apolo strips an edge with about 3 laps to go and basically limps home the rest of the race - but still strong enough to have won the TT.

Video from Saguenay World Cup!

061223a.jpg

Saguenay and Montreal videos, courtesy of the ISU

WOW! It's a very Merry Christmas from the ISU, which has posted video highlights of World Cup 3 in Saguenay... this is really exciting and encouraging to see. Many thanks to them for making this available! (Caveat: Video is unavailable to viewers in Canada, Japan and China due to broadcast rights issues - although Canuck viewers report they can see the clips just fine.) Thank you, ISU!

I especially recommend the men's 1500m semis and A and B finals, showcasing Jordan Malone, Charles Ryan Leveille and Ryan Bedford, and of course the U.S. men's bronze-medal winning relay final. Except that the relays don't appear to be there.

Note virtuoso announcer Dany Lemay calling races in English, French and Italian simultaneously. I think I read somewhere that he had used Chinese as well!

"The reality is that America's youth are using performance enhancement drugs at a younger age. We need to educate them about the consequences of using these drugs and educating them that they can achieve anything without drugs."

New music video featuring Apolo and other Olympians

To watch the director's cut of the video, visit the 'Behind the Scenes' section of OffthePodium.com.

060103a.jpg

'The NBC Agency has produced a music video in partnership with the popular Hip-Hop group, Flipsyde, as a unique promotional element in support of NBC's coverage of the upcoming Torino Olympic Winter Games. Featuring the hit single "Someday," the video salutes the athletes striving to make the team that will represent the United States in Torino.

' "Someday," from Flipsyde's recently released debut album, "We The People" encourages everyone to strive for their dreams, a belief shared by Flipsyde's band members as well as the Olympic athletes who appear in the video. Shot on location at a Los Angeles-area ice rink owned by Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan, the video showcases the message in Flipsyde's music by illuminating the determination, heartache and triumph experienced by world class athletes in their drive for Olympic gold. In addition to Kwan, Olympic gold medalist, Apolo Anton Ohno, America's best short track speed skater, took to the ice for the production.

Flipsyde will make their national television debut performing "Someday" on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno, January 5th 11:35/10:35c on NBC.' Read more

Apolo's anti-doping PSA

051012a.jpg The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's latest campaign "Celebrating the Value of Fair Play" was unveiled today at the Olympic Media Summit in Colorado Springs. The campaign inclues tv commercials and ads featuring Apolo and other Winter Olympians.

USADA chose Apolo's spot as the intro to their site at usantidoping.org. To see the whole thing as well as the other commercials, click here. You'll see movie theater ads and the tv spots are below them.

Todayonline.com | Olympians pitch "fair play" message in US anti-doping campaign

"I want young people to understand how important it is to respect your sport and compete with integrity," said Apolo Anton Ohno, the 2002 Winter Olympic 1,500-meter short track speedskating champion. It lets athletes around the world know the USA is passionate about competing clean in sports."
Ohno, of Japanese descent, said he believes there are dope cheats who have evaded detection in his sport but that the number is small.
"Unfortunately, that's a reality," Ohno said. "Athletes finding ways to get around something - that will always be there. It's diminishing. That number is getting smaller. For most athletes, I don't think it enters their mind."

Seoul Day 3 video (Korean TV broadcast)

U.S. speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno reacts as he cross the finish line during the men 3000m final of the 2005-2006 ISU World Cup Short Track Championship in Seoul. Ohno won the gold medal with a time of 5:38.465.(AFP/Jung Yeon-Je)

Once again, thanks to Starangel, we have access to video of all 3 days of racing in Seoul! See the comments for instructions on accessing the video.

Tragically, they didn't include the 3000m in the footage but you can see Apolo's fabulous 1000m quarter, semi and final performances as well as the women's and men's relays.

Day 3 footage is about 55 minutes long. Here's a key to race highlights:
- Video starts with men's 1000m quarter finals
- Rusty Smith qtr final at 1:50
- Apolo Ohno qtr final at 8:22
- Women's semi finals at 15:59
- Men's semis at 22:50 (AAO in 1st semi)
- Men's final at ~34:50
- Men's relay final at ~45:20

Click the 'continue reading' link for 'spoilers' and screen shots from the video.

Quarter finals
Not a great start for Rusty - he's 4th off the line and unfortunately never really gets into it.

Apolo is 4th off the line but with 6 to go makes a sweeping outside pass to take the lead.

Semi finals
Women's semi #1 is a cool race - lots of talent. Nice to see Borodulina hold on to qualify behing Meng Wang for the semis. She celebrates as she crosses the line!

Apolo false starts. Crowd reacts. He glides around, hands on knees, to regain focus. The other skaters line up again. Bedard looks at the starter, then turns to his left and looks at Ohno with a 'Dude, what are you doing?' expression on his face -- the camera moves over to show that Apolo's hasn't straighted up, he's at the line but still has his hands on his knees and head down. Finally he straightens up for the start.

regroup.jpg

They get off to a clean start. With 7 to go, Apolo passes on the inside then falls back to 3rd. With 3 to go, Apolo decides to accelerate on the outside to get past the Oh. The crowd goes nuts... the two skaters are thisclose. Good move. Apolo tucks in behind Li and Oh has nowhere to go.

This 'Let's Go Canada' banner got lots of airtime!
gocan.jpg

Men's final
The men's 1000 final gets started. Big cheers for Lee, a huge roar as Ahn announced... some faint yelling for AAO too! Maybe a few Americans are in the stands.

Apolo steps to the line for the 1000m final
1000line.jpg

They're off... what a race this is... as the crowd chants, Apolo slips in front of Li for 2nd, then comes around Ahn on the outside with 5 to go. Ahn turns his head and watches Apolo coming. Screaming from the crowd. Li takes the lead back. Li and Ohno are in a great position once more, with the 2 Korean skaters behind them. With 2 to go, Apolo slips by Li on the inside to take back the lead and keep it for good. Sweet victory!

Li skates around the rink, slapping hands like he won the race! Old man still got it going on!

Women's relay final
Chinese women have taken a huge lead in the first third of the race. Odd to see the Koreans so far back in 3rd, and Canada last. Canada manages to move up to 2nd but Korea passes with about 5 to go. China's lead has gotten big enough that I can't tell just how big it is. When the camera is on China, the other teams are nowhere to be seen and vice versa. The gap is narrowing by the end... Whoa, Korea slips a bit. Close battle for 2nd, with Korea edging Canada.

Men's relay final

Rusty gets ready to lead off the relay for Team USA
rusty.jpg

We settle into 4th early on. High spirits among the spectators, who break out in song for the early part of the relay. The only change after 18 laps is Canada has taken over the lead from China. With 25 to go Korea gets the lead on an exchange. The crowd is loving it! Ooh, but Canada isn't giving an inch... and pulls ahead with 14 to go! Korea makes some kind of adjustment to its exchanges and skips when the other teams exchange, doing theirs a lap later. In a few strokes, Ahn Hyun-soo accelerates brilliantly past Canada to regain the lead. Team Korea isn't going to let the crowd leave disappointed! With 5 to go, China passes Canada to move into 2nd. Gosh, Kim Dong-sung sounds excited in the broadcast booth! He says 'Ahn Hyun-soo' a whole lot.

The Korean men get their gold and the Mokdong Ice Arena goes wild!

The victorious Korean men's relay team accepts the crowd's applause with a bow.

Video from Day 1 in Seoul

Thanks to our benefactor (benefactress?) Starangel, we have access to basically the entire first day of racing in Seoul. See the comments to this post for access info. There is over 2 hours of footage here.

It's start off with women's heats and men's quarter finals. To expedite your viewing, some key races take place at these points in the video:

- Women's semis start at about 1:05
- Men's semis start at about 1:20
- Ladies' final begins around 1:50
- Men's final begins around 1:57

It took some efforts and assistance from my coworker to get this playing for me, so here are some screen shots I took while watching this in case not everyone can get in to watch:

Video begins with heats, then men's quarter finals -- then they replay the men's quarter finals during the zamboni break. They also show the races out of order, so it gets confusing to remember what you're watching!

The attendance at the venue appears sparse, but this is a weekday afternoon. Still, they get those drums going whenever a Korean is skating and the crowd makes noise when one of their skaters starts to pass. Loads of cute kids in the stands.

Rusty looked good in his quarter final. I guess he was DQ'ed for impeding on Chataignier, or maybe x-tracking? Hard to tell ... Chataignier was making the pass. I wouldn't want to be a judge!

They are being good about announcing DQ's in the venue after the fact. You often hear the venue announcer announce a DQ from the previous race while the following one is taking place, but I didn't hear one in Rusty's case.

Allison's semi is pretty exciting! She starts strong and hangs in there... Radanova is so strong in this race! And the poor Korean girl falls there in the last lap. No DQ's or discretionary advancements for her though... There was some jostling with her and Mile Zhu the lap before. Anyway, she looks a bit shaken up, hope she is ok.

Apolo's semi is 1st -- a really nice race! He makes it look so easy, like a skate in the park. To make Nick happy I'll comment on how well Apolo and Mathieu work together to block Oh. Oh tries to set something up but he just can't get around the North American Wall.

In Guilmette's semi with about 7 to go, suddenly he and Jiajun slip out of the frame as though someone grabbed hold of their britches and yanked backwards. On the replay, Jiajun appears to be squeezed between Praus and Jo, then slips up behind Jo, stumbles and falls. Jiajun's left arm trips up Jo's left foot and he too falls.

Still not sure why Jiajun was not DQ'ed. Did a movement from Jo set off the reaction that led to Jiajun's stumble and Jo's fall in turn? I don't think so from the side angle. Or maybe it's because Jiajun clearly wasn't going to make it to the final in any case? Not that that usually prevents a DQ...

Then they replay men's and women's semis just to confuse me a bit more.

I'm actually starting to get tired of watching short track. It's taking forever to get to the finals!

Women's final - It's an impressive display of power when Radanova launches her move around the outside of the pack to take a huge lead. Wish she could have held on for the win. This final was every bit as exciting as it appeared on the Live Cyberscoreboard!

Yikes! I got nervous all over again just watching the men go. I think the DQ pretty clearly happened with a lap to go, you see the contact with Apolo and Lee. They don't replay it or announce it in any case as the entire clip ends right after the race. Hey, Apolo was going for it and very nearly got himself a spot on the podium! Oh well, DQ's happen.

Aside - I am glad we have an all-blue skinsuit this year. Too many red, white and blue countries. France is starting to look like Great Britain to me. Russia and Netherlands blend together too.
