AAO USS Athlete of the Year
Rodriguez, Ohno Named U.S. Speedskating's 2003 Athletes of the Year
"COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO., January 13, 2004 – Ohno won his second career World Cup title in February, earning 196 points out of a possible 200 during the season. He had a hand in 12 of the 13 short track medals won by the U.S. during the 2003 calendar year, winning 10 individual medals (3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze), and two relay medals (one silver and one bronze). Ohno won his fifth U.S. National Short Track Championship in March in Bay City, Mich., and set American records in all four distances during 2003: 500-meters (Oct. 11), 1000-meters (Oct. 26), 1500-meters (Oct. 24), and 3000-meters (Dec. 7). In February, he was named a finalist for the Amateur Athletic Union's James E. Sullivan Memorial Award which recognizes the top amateur athlete in the nation." Full article

USOC Athlete of the Month
Ohno Wins USOC Athlete of the Month Honors
U.S. Olympic Committee Honors Patricia Miranda, Apolo Anton Ohno, and Misty May and Kerri Walsh for October Accomplishments
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) today named women’s wrestler Patricia Miranda and speed skating sensation Apolo Anton Ohno as the October Athletes of the Month. The USOC Team of the Month honor was awarded to beach volleyball duo Misty May and Kerri Walsh.
Ohno (Seattle, Wash.) set three American short track speedskating records during the month of October. At the Conematic Heating short track event in Calgary, Oct. 10-12, Ohno’s 500-meters time of 41.518 seconds bettered his previous record of 41.628. The following weekend (Oct. 17-19) at the first World Cup event of the season in Calgary, Ohno won a bronze medal in the 1500-meters and placed sixth overall. He finished the month in a flurry by setting two American records at the Oct. 24-26 World Cup event in Marquette, Mich. His time of 1:25.83 in the 1000-meters lowered the previous record of 1:26.67, and his clocking of 2:11.28 in the 1500-meters shattered the mark of 2:13.34. Ohno won gold in the 500-meters, bronze in the 1500-meters and placed third overall at the Marquette World Cup.

Marquette appearance
It seems like Marquette is embracing Team USA just as Bay City did last year for the US Championships. From wluctv6.com:
Reception Held For Speed Skaters
The city of Marquette is welcoming speed skaters from around the world for this weekend's speed skating World Cup. Last night members of the United States team attended a reception in their honor. The speed skaters arrived just a few days ago to continue their training at the Berry Events Center. Since day one, the Olympians say the community has shown great support for the team.
Olympian Apolo Ohno says, "This is a big deal. World Cup international event. We have countries, Korea, china, Canada, Austria, Slovakia, Israel. You name it and they're here. So for us this is a big deal and to have a community embrace that and understand and to be there for the support of the U.S. team is just phenomenal."
The actual speed skating events will kick off October 24 at the Berry Events Center and run through October 26.

Passage to Paradise - Sonia
Passage to Paradise
The NorCal fans have waited an age for Apolo to grace their city. Their patience was rewarded last night as both Ohno boys were in attendance at Kristi Yamaguchi's Passage to Paradise fundraiser in San Francisco. Here is Sonia's account:

Passage to Paradise - Susan G.
Susan G. has sent in this synopsis of Friday night's Passage to Paradise in San Francisco:
Around a dozen Apolo fans joined 3500 people in the ballroom of the Hotel Nikko Friday night in the "Passage to Paradise" fundraiser. Anyone who saw Kristi Yamaguchi's video will be very glad to see just where that ticket money is going...all to very good causes.
Yuki and Apolo were there, surrounded by the usual hordes of people wanting pictures. As celebs they were seated at a table for the $500 per person participants rather than the mere (!) $250 per person most people paid. However, they spent the last 45 minutes of the fundraiser by the table where the Ohnozone fans were seated. Apolo posed for endless pictures, handed (or armed?) out multiple (yes multiple) hugs. Everyone got multiple opportunities for face time and we all went back to the well for more sips. He was poised, confident, happy and genuinely grateful to see us all. He knows this bunch by name and sight now and I believe each one of us could tell a personal story to that effect. Apolo gave Ted a hearty handshake and a "I'm glad to meet you!" We got an anniversary picture, a free bottle of champagne from the Hotel Nikko (2 glasses) and a night we'll never forget.

Salt Lake Tribune Article - Zoutou
Look what is in today's Salt Lake Tribune!
Ohno wins gold off ice with his charity work
"Declaring a 'lifelong commitment' to charity work, Olympic hero Apolo Anton Ohno took a break from a summer training camp at the Olympic Oval on Thursday to praise the work of the Ronald McDonald House Charities with which he is involved."
A great plug for Zoutou:
"Using a Web site -- http://st-gear.com/zoutou/ -- to promote the project, the fans are aiming to raise at least $10,000 and earn a room bearing Ohno's name in the Ronald McDonald House at 935 E. South Temple. So far, the charity has received $2,411 from Ohno fans."

know him from adam: Apolo Ohno

From today's Denver Post: "Short-track speed skaters typically are not heard from in mid-June. But then, Apolo Anton Ohno is not your typical short-track speed skater. A gold-medal winner in the 1,500 meters and silver-medal winner in the 1,000 at the 2002 Winter Olympics, Ohno is in Orlando, Fla., on Sunday to accept the 2002 Citizenship Through Sports Alliance Award, which the United States Olympic Committee will present for the sportsmanship he has demonstrated."
Why doesn't someone actually publicize these things?? Anyway, Adam Schefter's Q&A with Apolo is great! Read it here.

"Tickets for the event are $1000 for a table and $75 for an individual" -- it may be too late, but if we have any Florida fans out there, details are here.
Via the Philadelphia Phillies and MLB.com:
"Jim Thome will be one of 14 athletes honored at the fifth annual Citizenship Through Sports Alliance Awards Reception. The event will take place on Sunday evening at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, FL. Thome was nominated for the award by Major League Baseball, which is a supporter of the CTSA. Thome will be unable to attend due to his baseball schedule. CTSA is paying tribute to "athletes with the highest ethical standards in sport, whose lives and careers have reflected an enduring commitment to citizenship, sportsmanship and community service." Other athletes being honored include Adam Graves, San Jose Sharks (NHL); Shelton Quarles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL); Bob Lanier, NBA Hall of Famer; and Apolo Anton Ohno, US Speedskater."

Apolo on TV
We Made National TV Today!
Apolo mentioned Ohno Zone this morning on the CBS Early Show!
Q: With everything happening in your life, is it hard to focus on skating?
AAO: No, not for me. As soon as I get on the ice, I feel like this is the place for me. I've had so much support from my father. Short track speedskating has come a long way since Salt Lake City. We have the help of a lot of fans who provide information to people who don't know anything about short track. My web site's coming out next month, which will be unbelievable for short track.... Another web site that people can go check is www.ohnozone.net.

Crash and Apolo in Baltimore

Crash Gets Punked by Apolo
Now sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip.
That started from Baltimore, aboard the Health Expo ship.
Five passengers set sail that day, for a three-hour tour, a three-hour tour.
The interview started getting rough,
The assembled crowd was star-crossed.
If not for the fearless OZ crew,
The Q & A would be lost; the Q & A would be lost.
The interview took ground on the shore of Pratt Street,
With Crash, and Noelle too,
Denise B. and B-more Monica,
The Butta too,
Here on Health Expo Isle.
FBI Dossier- File # 152187
The following was observed on Friday, May 9, 2003 at the Baltimore Convention Center during the Question and Answer period with one Apolo Anton Ohno, by the assigned undercover agents and is believed to warrant further surveillance:
Interviewer: Anyone have a question for Apolo? Yes, you. State your name and where you’re from, please.
Crash at the mic

Crash: Hi, Apolo. I’m Crash. I’m from just down the street in Fell’s Point. Have you ever checked out that part of the city?
Apolo: Oh, yeah. Take the water taxi. I know it.
Crash: Well, as you know Kim Dong-Sung has recorded his own rap CD…
Apolo: What?! He what?
Crash: You didn’t know that? Yeah, check out Kazaa, I’m sure it’s on there. Not that I, in any manner, advocate the illegal downloading of music…
Interviewer: (Unintelligible baiting of Ms. Crash, trying to get her to repeat that she illegally downloads music. She is apparently hip to this maneuver and does not fall for it.)
Crash: If you were to record your own rap CD, what would your MC name be?
Apolo: My MC name? I really have no rap skills at all…uh, I don’t know.
Crash: I don’t believe that for a second. If you don’t come up with a name, I’ll come up with one for you…
At this point Ms. Crash became indignant, placing her hands on her hips and tapping her foot. Apparently sensing that security was about to wrestle her to the ground, she stepped away from the microphone.
See for yourself, in this exclusive video clip*, straight from FBI Dossier- File # 152187....
