Denton Record-Chronicle | Malone tries to skate back into top form

Jordan Malone, 24, said he feels strong after rehabilitating a broken foot suffered while jogging in August, which came on the heels of hip surgery in April and nose surgery over the summer. He was forced to wear a walking cast and was unable to skate for two months, though he stayed in shape by cycling.

“It was really hard,” he said. “I couldn’t do anything, but I was really anxious to be out there. This is the last chance to show your guns before the big one comes around. I’ve got everything in my sights. I know what I need to do, and I’m pretty sure I can do it.”

St Louis Post-Dispatch | Jefferson City skater Carly Wilson advances in U.S. Short Track Nationals

The stops and starts in her skating career seem to have made Carly Wilson, 22, more patient. She said she would love to place in the top five here, which would secure a spot in the world cup events in February and world championships in March. But she'd be pleased to take a few steps forward, as long as her momentum keeps her pointed toward Vancouver, site of the 2010 Winter Games.

"With everything that set me back, the Olympics are my real focus," she said. "Anything else is just extra."

St Louis Post-Dispatch | Apolo Ohno stays on top, favored at U.S. Short Track Championships

“This dude doesn’t ever fade,” rival Jordan Malone said. “He’s always on top. It’s not if he comes down to your level. We’re always trying to get up to where he is.

"I started because of '02 and this guy," said Malone, a former world in-line skating champion. "To be able to train with him is spectacular. To see Tiger Woods play is one thing. To train with him or compete against him is another."

December 17, 2008

Sorry I haven't posted in about 100 years. Also, I wish I could tell you when comments were coming back. (Their absence hasn't helped get me in the holiday posting spirit!) I guess I missed some good world cups and I'm probably about to miss nationals, but at least I got these Google News alerts in time:

AP | Speed skater Ohno has high expectations

The ice is very different from Salt Lake, but it's a very fine facility," Katherine Reutter said. "I've trained in St. Louis a long time and I like this rink. I think the ice, come Friday, Saturday and Sunday, is going to be fast, and there will be good racing on it. I feel like I have an advantage. There's no place I'd rather be."

Apolo Ohno is eager to see what some of the younger racers can do.

"It's an honor for me to be on the ice and to have guys look up and say, 'I want to keep up with this guy,"' Ohno said. "Hopefully I can lead our young team in Vancouver to a lot of medals. That's my goal."
