Recent short track news

American Cup 1 is happening this weekend in Minneapolis and will decide the U.S. team for the first 4 World Cups events of the season. Worlds Cups 1 and 2 are just a month away!

In the meantime, here are some links with news I've missed due to a recent vacation and general inertia:

Sports Illustrated | Faces in the Crowd

Landon Hatfield CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. > Speedskating

Landon, a senior at Albemarle High, is the 2008 U.S. Short Track Junior Men's national champion. He won the 500, 1,000 and 1,500 meters, the last in junior-record time (2:27.633), and will compete in this month's American Cup, which is a World Cup qualifier.

Here's Landon's accompanying video clip:

Bay City Times | Local skater joins brother to train in Salt Lake City

Morgan Izykowski joins big brother Alex to train in SLC:

"The biggest motivation in moving is obviously the training environment," said Morgan, who skated with some Japanese and Australian skaters during the visit. "The program offers more athletes to train with who have similar goals and abilities and much more access to ice time."

Bay City Times | Skater already has a Vancouver plan

Ryan Bedford is the latest skater giving a serious shot at skating both long track and short track in the same season. He hopes to try out for both Olympic teams next year:

"I'd heard from people that I would be good at long track over short track because of how tall I am and my endurance strength," said Bedford, who is ranked 10th in the World Short Track 1,500 meters. "I started out wearing my short track skates.

"After getting the right equipment and skating trials, I amazed a lot of people with my performance. I can switch back and forth from long track to short track with very little loss of 'feeling.' Some people have a hard time making the switch."
