Nationals day 2 - 500m finals
Thanks to photographer extraordinaire Jerry Search for the photo!

men's 500m A final results
1. J.P. Kepka
2. Simon Cho
DQ Apolo Ohno - cross-tracking
DQ Jordan Malone - cross-tracking
What an exciting race! J.P. surged to the lead from the start and held it for most of the race. Apolo passed him for the lead in the last lap and a half or so. Jordan had a fall towards the end, although I didn't see it at all. Although Apolo crossed the line in first, he and Jordan were both disqualified for cross-tracking. Simon got himself some really valuable second-place points there too. Nice job.
Congrats to J.P. on his new American record of 41.369 (I believe), set during his semifinal.
women's 500m A final results
1. Katherine Reutter
2. Kimberly Derrick
3. Tina Koenig
4. Allison Baver
Allison fell with about 2 laps to go.

Top 16 men and women after 9-lap time trials
[update] Times are now in for the women's time trials.
Here's the men (in order) who made the cut from this morning's time trials - they'll move on to the 1500m tonight. During Apolo Ohno and Travis Jayner's pair we learned that Derek Parra lost a photo of his daughter somewhere inside the oval... Hope it was returned (if not, I suspect souvenir hunting)!
Jordan Malone recovered from a scary-looking slip to finish a solid 4th. Anthony Lobello returns from his suspension with a strong 3rd-place showing, and Alex Izykowski capped his return after a long layoff with a 6th place overall. Hats off to Jeff Simon for winning this thing - we haven't seen Apolo fail to take a time trial since I've been watching this sport, but I doubt that's any deficiency on AAO's part... I think it's really a testament to the huge strides our younger skaters have taken the past season or two!
Top 16 men
1. Jeff Simon 1:23.861
2. Apolo Ohno 1:23.943
3. Anthony Lobello 1:24.438
4. Jordan Malone 1:24.860
5. Ryan Leveille 1:25.249
6. J.R. Celski 1:25.409
7. J.P. Kepka 1:25.599
8. Alex Izykowski 1:26.001
9. Travis Jayner 1.26.575
10. Ryan Bedford 1:27.105
11. Kyle Carr 1:27.141
12. Joey Lindsey 1:27.166
13. Simon Cho 1:27.618
14. Robert Lawrence 1:28.180
15. Kyle Uyehara 1:28.219
16. Ansis Robs 1:28.456
Here's the ladies (in order) who made the cut from this morning's time trials - they'll move on to the 1500m tonight. (Sorry, I don't have times.) Looks like Katherine Reutter is looking to extend her dominance so far this season on the women's side. Also, a very strong start for Allison Baver after along hiatus from competition! It's a relief to see Halie Kim back too.

New short track blog from Australia
Just discovered this great new resource: ShortTrackAustralia.com is authored by Andrew McNee, presumably a brother of veteran Aussie national team member Mark McNee (who's always been one of our favorite people on the World Cup circuit!).
Anyway, co-blog author, Canadian Graeme Carbert has a run-down of some of the ST sites he's enjoyed reading over the years, including OZ.

Salt Lake Tribune | U.S. Short Track Championships: Americans thinking big
It has been a tumultuous year for the speedskaters who will compete at the U.S. Short Track Championships starting today at the Utah Olympic Oval, having had to move to their new training headquarters here and get accustomed to a new coaching staff. But they believe it will all pay off in the end - with a medal haul at the 2010 Vancouver Games. "For the next couple of years, we have the best coaching staff in the world," two-time Olympian Apolo Ohno said. "And we have not had that in the past. So that, in itself, should definitely bring some better results."
"I'm very sure we can be the best team of the world," head coach Jae-Su Chun said in halting English. "Still, we have a lot of work for that. Especially at 2010, best results ever. . . . It will be very amazing."
"Personally, I feel that we're a year ahead of where we should be," [high performance director Guy] Thibault said. "The team I see, the level I see here right now . . . I wasn't thinking to see that until next summer or next fall. The job they have done in a year is amazing."
GO USA!!

Future of Kearns Oval in doubt?
Deseret Morning News | Oval contract about to expire
Fourteen years ago, the collaborative movement behind building an Olympic speedskating oval in Kearns was idealistic and eager.Today, with 12 days left until the known future of the Utah Olympic Oval officially expires, things have changed.
The Jan. 1, 2008, expiration of a contract between the Utah Athletic Association and the Oquirrh Recreation and Parks District has been looming since 1993, but both groups are still trying to hammer out negotiations that would help preserve the oval's future, rather than ultimately revert ownership of the facility to Kearns. The facility has been operating at an annual deficit of $1.5 million....

Photos from Tuesday in Kearns
Skaters are training in preparations for Nationals this week. Thanks to Vicki Labourdette, Sebastian Cano, Chris Crevling and Peggy Aitken for sharing them with us!
An observer writes: 'It's going to be competitive all the way around...both men and women. The ice is going to be a problem though. They used city water for the short track rink a few weeks ago and the ice was GREAT! Then in an attempt to make it faster, they used the same water they use for the long track. That water works great for LT but not for ST....it breaks out really bad.'
Didn't that happen at the 2003 World Cup in Kearns also?

Salt Lake Tribune | Speedskating: Ohno poised for return to racing
Unless you count the dance floor, speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno has not competed in the better part of a year. So this weekend will be good for him. The 25-year-old two-time Olympian and celebrity heartthrob will be the main attraction at the U.S. Short-Track Championships at the Utah Olympic Oval, beginning his long run-up to the 2010 Vancouver Games in Canada with a new Utah home, a new coaching staff and a stratospheric new level of popularity after his star turn on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars.""I basically took two full summers off," he said. "Not a good idea, for any athlete. But the transition has been going well. I'm excited about this competition. I haven't raced for quite a long time, and it's about time."
Deseret Morning News | Speedskater Ohno eager to get back on Utah ice
Since moving its offices from Colorado Springs to Utah, most of the skaters involved with the short track program have also packed up and joined the coaches here."It's great that the spirit of the Olympics is still here in Salt Lake City, at the oval, especially," Amanda Baver [sic] said.
"The biggest difference is we have the control here," team member Travis Jayner said, noting the availability of ice, a running track, weight room and coaches all in one place. "There is no facility in the world that has all those things combined."
Putting all those ingredients together, [Apolo] Ohno says, will make for the best team the United States has ever had. "They all bring something else to the pie," Ohno said. "And we all like pie."
