1500m medalists in Montreal
'Our pic is gonna be on ohnozone!' silver - Hyun-kon Kim (KOR), gold - Hyun-soo Ahn (KOR), bronze - Ze Hu (CHN)

I couldn't believe the Koreans were talking about OZ while I was taking pictures of them. These 3 guys were smiling for our cameras, and Kim and Ahn were joking back and forth with a team staff member next to me who was also taking pictures. All I hear is a bunch of Korean I can't understand and then 'ohnozone, ohnozone.' I guess they knew their pic would end up here. So here you go guys! Hee hee.
silver - Min-jung Kim (KOR), Eun-ju Jung (KOR), Tianyu Fu (CHN)

Congratulations all around!

First individual World Cup medal for Jordan Malone!
Jordan just skated to a silver medal in the men's 1000m final behind Charles Hamelin, to give North America a 1-2 podium finish. Congratulations to Charles and to Jordan on his first individual World Cup medal - surely this is just the beginning!
Here comes Jordan! Making his move in the 1000m final

1000m final - Charles Hamelin and Jordan Malone

Ho-suk Lee uncharacteristically fell on his own. Jordan lacked his powerful finishing kick because he seemed to be having problems with his blades but he hung on for silver all the same. WAY TO GO, JORDAN!

World Cup #4 - Montreal day 2 - 1000m & 1500m
1000m semi finals Some tough luck for the Canadian skaters this afternoon.
Charles Hamelin and Jordan Malone will both skate in the A final.
- Tremblay crashed in his semi - not too sure what happened there honestly but more surprisingly Ryan Bedford was disqualified for impeding against Australia in the last lap. He had lost ground and swerved to avoid colliding with Flou as he fell so some rough luck there for both skaters.
- Kalyna Roberge ran into trouble in her semi final as well and was disqualified for impeding. It looked like she collided with the Chinese skater and both fell. Korea's Jeon was advanced.
- Jordan Malone had another outstanding race but a close call when Marc-Andre Monette crashed just after a pass by Jordan. Monette was disqualified as well.
- Charles Hamelin came through cleanly, winning his semi final
1500m quarter finals
There were no American women skating in the semis today. Canadian Annik Plamondon slipped in her race and fell out of contention. Ivanie Blondin pupt on a powerful move to take the lead with 3 laps to go, opening up a large gap on the field. Only the Chinese skater could stay with her. There was a false start in Ivanie's race and the starter assessed it to himself which was a refreshing change!
1000m quarter finals
- Kimberly Derrick was the only American woman skating and she didn't make it out of her race
- Kalyna Roberge was 2nd in her quarter final; Amanda Overland was 3rd in hers and will not advance
Amanda Overland leads Sun-yu Jin and Satomi Sakai in their 1000m qtr final

- Jordan Malone scooted from last place to the lead with a nice little inside pass to win his race
1000m qtr final - Jordan Malone leads the pack

- J.P. Kepka had made a very nice move to gain the lead and was skating powerfully when he hit a block and fell with 3 laps to go. What a pity! Marc-Andre Monette won this same heat
J.P. makes his move in his 1000m qtr final

- Jeff Scholten was edged at the line for 3rd in his race and will not advance
- Charles Hamelin won his heat even though Ho-suk Lee turned on the jets and tried hard to find an opportunity to pass him in the final two laps of the race. The 'locomotive from Ste Julie' as Dany Lemay called him was having none of it but that was a kick-ass race to watch.

World Cup #4 - Montreal day 2 - 1000m & 1500m repechage
So apparently they're skating the 1000m and 1500m #1 today and the 500m will be tomorrow.
Looks like Cyberscoreboard is updating fast this morning so be sure to check there for latest and complete results!
1000m repechage A final men - Top 2 finishers in this race earn the right to compete in this afternoon's World Cup quarter final round of the 1000m.
1. J.P. Kepka
2. Paul Stanley (GBR)
3. Viktor Knock (HUN) ADV
DQ Travis Jayner - impeding with 5 laps to go
J.P. will move on to the World Cup quarter finals in the afternoon. Travis was studying the replay intently after the race so I think he knew something was up. Bummer!
1500m repechage A final men - Top 2 finishers in this race earn the right to compete in this afternoon's World Cup quarter final round of the 1500m #1.
1. Olivier Jean (CAN)
2. Paul Hermann (GER)
4. Michael Gilday (CAN)
5. Alex Izykowski (USA)
Izy was really strong in this race but faded back to 5th in the last couple of laps.
1500m repechage A final women - Top 2 finishers in this race earn the right to compete in this afternoon's World Cup quarter final round of the 1500m #1.
1. Katia Zini (ITA)
2. Erika Huszar (HUN)
3. Sarah Lang (USA)
4. Tina Koenig (USA)
6. Sonia Milan (USA)
Sonia looked like she may have got hit in the mouth by another skater's glove a few laps before the end of the race.
Michael Gilday leads the pack in the 1500m #1 repechage semi final

Earlier rounds below the jump
1500m repechage semi finals men
- Olivier Jean won this race. Charles Ryan Leveille was supposed to skate in the first semi but has apparently hurt his ankle/foot. It's wrapped and he's hobbling around on it but appears to be done skating for a bit.
- Michael Gilday and Alex Izykowski finished 1-2 in the second semi final.
1500m repechage semi finals women
- Tina Koenig skated out in front the last half of the race to win, with Sonia Milan behind her till she was knocked out of the race when a Russian skater made a bad pass. Sonia has been advanced to the repechage A final.
- With about 6 laps to go, Sarah Lang made a sweeping outside pass to take the lead in the 2nd semi final. She was passed again by Katia Zini but held on for 2nd and will join her teammates in the repechage A final.

World Cup #4 - Montreal day 1 - 500m &1500m qualifying
Relay heats men - The Americans and Canadians both won their respective relay heats
500m heats men - top 3 in each heat plus 4 fastest third-place finishers move on to the semifinals on Sunday
Americans
- Charles Ryan Leveille was 4th on the line with Hamelin 3rd. Without that explosive start, Leveille had no time to catch up and finished last in his heat.
- Alex Izykowski had another strong race and finished 3rd
Charles Hamelin

Canadians
- Francois-Louis Tremblay has some crazy stuff happen in his races. At least I've never seen a skater lose an entire blade before today. Right after the start, the Russian skater Pavel Rybakov flew into the boards in front of me after his left skate blade literally peeled off the sole of his boot. He had to hop over the boards and get off the ice at that point. The race was restarted and Flou won. He's gotten this strategy of ensuring himself lane 1 in all his 500s down to a science.
- Charles Hamelin and Olivier Jean also won their races
Flou Tremblay and Roberto Serra

500m heats women - top 3 in each heat plus 4 fastest third-place finishers move on to the semifinals on Sunday
Americans
- Tina Koenig fell at the start and the race was stopped and restarted. She finished 3rd in her heat.
- Cherise Wilkins was also 3rd in her heat.
500m heat: Ji-soo Jeon (KOR), Tina Koenig (USA), Emily Rosemond (AUS), Xiaolei Cheng (CHN)

Canadians
- Kalyna Roberge won her heat

- Annik Plamondon fell with about 3 laps to go and finished last
1500m #2 heats men - top 3 in each heat plus 2 fastest third-place finishers move on to the semifinals on Sunday
Americans
- Travis Jayner won his heat handily
- Ryan Bedford was 2nd in his heat
- Jordan Malone won his heat with no problem, but he's gonna kill me if he keeps racing from the back Apolo-style like that!
Canadians
- Jeff Scholten was 3rd in his heat
- Michael Gilday finished 4th in his heat
- I believe Marc-Andre Monette was 2nd in his heat M-A Monette has been advanced to the next round
1500m #2 heats women - top 3 in each heat move on to the semifinals on Sunday
Canadians
Americans
- Kimberly Derrick finished 3rd in her heat
- Lezleigh Jaworski finished 5th in her heat

Canadians
- Amanda Overland was 3rd in her heat
- Ivanie Blondin was 2nd in her heat
- Anne Maltais was 3rd in her heat which was won in powerful fashion by Meng Wang
500m prelim results/photos below the fold...
500m prelims men - top 2 in each heat move on to the heats
Americans
- Charles Ryan Leveille took a bit of time to get up to speed but he finished 2nd in his heat
- J.P. Kepka had a wild heat and was dq'ed for cross-tracking at the finish line. A half-lap before the finish, the Korean skater stumbled badly and was also dq'ed for impeding.
- Alex Izykowski won his race
500m prelim - Charles Ryan Leveille

Canadians
- Oliver Jean, Francois-Louis Tremblay and Charles Hamelin all won their heats. Tremblay won his by miles. I think if he'd applied himself he'd have lapped the others.
it's off center, but I like this pic because you feel like you're *in* the race... Olivier Jean (CAN) leads Elliott Shriane (AUS) and Hu Ze (CHN)

- Jessica Gregg was disqualified for impeding
1500m #1 heats men - top 2 plus 2 fastest third-place finishers qualify for tomorrow's 1500m quarter finals
Americans
- Fabio Carta just edged Ryan Bedford at the line for first. Ryan pulled the whole race and he and Fabio had a large gap on the pack
- In a dramatic heat, Charles Ryan Leveille moved to the front midway through the race and looked strong. With 3 laps to go Olivier Jean hit a block and crashed out of the race. The Korean and Chinese skaters passed Ryan who faded a bit and finished 3rd. Not sure if he got a bit caught up in avoiding Jean's accident there.
- Alex Izykowski skated a strong race but got passed by several skaters in the final laps and finished 4th.
Canadians
- Francois-Louis Tremblay waited till the last lap to pass up to 2nd from 3rd
- Olivier Jean hit a block and crashed, finishing last in his race
- Michael Gilday had a tough outing. Most of the race he was going smoothly in 2nd behind a Russian skater. He tried to pass into the lead with 2-3 laps to go and apparently misjudged his distance, nearly clipping the Russian's skate from behind at the first block. Michael finished 3rd but his face intercepted another skater's glove in the race for the finish line and it looked it smarted... he may have been cut a bit. Think he's fine though.
Results from 1000m preliminaries are below the jump...

Jiajun Li to coach in Canada
The recently retired short track great is heading to British Columbia where he'll coach the Prince George Blizzards speedskating club while earning coaching credentials from Speed Skating Canada and studying English. In fact, he's already there, apparently having arrived in time for the Canadian Junior Nationals which his new club hosted this past weekend.

Team USA at the banquet on Sunday night
Jordan's mom brought Santa hats to the banquet and all the U.S. skaters put them on for a team photo (which proved irresistible to the Japanese girls)!

l-r: France (coach Larry's better half), J.P. Kepka, Sarah Lang, Larry Daignault, coach Chae, Kimberly Derrick, Cherise Wilkins, Ryan Bedford, Sonia Milan, Travis Jayner, Lezleigh Jaworski, trainer John, Tina Koenig - and of course, Jordan Malone in front!
Teams USA and Japan's female half

At the banquet, a phenomenal video was presented that local college students put together with highlights from the World Cup weekend in Saguenay. Each team received a DVD so I'm trying to convince someone to get it on YouTube so we can share it here!

Relay finals - bronze for Team USA
Teams Korea and USA mugging on the relay awards podium

Men A final
1. Korea
2. China
3. USA
4. Italy
The guys worked really well together and Jordan came thisclose at the end to overtaking China for 2nd. Man, that was a great race and shows how competitive our guys are getting! Solid race, team USA!!
A tightly bunched exchange during the men's relay final

Men B final
1. Germany
2. Japan
DQ France
This is one of the more exciting 3-team B finals you could imagine. Germany had the lead when they had fall with about 27 laps to go. They busted ass to make up the huge gap that opened up with Japan and France, and with 14 to go they were back in 2nd place. After that, France and Germany traded the lead a couple of times but France made a bad pass and although they crossed the line in front, they were later disqualified for impeding.
Bronze medal winning Canadian women's relay team

ccw from bottom left: Kalyna Roberge, Amanda Overland, Anne Maltais, Jessica Gregg, Annik Plamondon, Ivanie Blondin
Ladies' A final
1. China
2. Korea
3. Canada
4. Italy
Wow, that was quite a race between China and Korea. China seems to have really come on strong this season! They led pretty much the whole race with Korea breathing down their necks. China and Korea opened up about a 1/3 of a lap over Canada and by the end about 3/4 of a lap over Italy.
Ladies' B final
1. Japan
2. Russia
3. Germany
4. USA
Early in the race, the U.S. was leading when Cherise exchanged to Tina - I don't know if it was an uneven push, but Tina literally spun around 180 degrees and then fell right after the exchange. Her fall also took out a German skater.

1000m finals - gold for Kalyna Roberge!
women's A final
1. Kalyna Roberge (CAN) 1:33.569
2. Chun-sa Byun (KOR) - 1:33.578
3. Sun-yu Jin (KOR) -1:33.644
4. Eun-ju Jung (KOR) - 1:34.225
Women's 1000m medalists: Byun (silver), Roberge (gold), Jin (bronze)

This was a tough race for Kalyna but she looked headed for a bronze medal.... the battle for gold was between the Koreans Jin and Jung. Just a couple feet from the finish line, Jin fell on her own and slid into Jung. They both went down, leaving the race to a photo finish between Kalyna and Byun. Kalyna just got the tip of her skate blade over the line ahead of Byun's.
One of the Korean girls was pretty badly shaken up but was able to stand up and was escorted off the ice under her own power.
Men's A final - Ahn gets his win!
1. Hyun-soo Ahn (KOR)
2. Ho-suk Lee (KOR)
3. B. Kim (KOR)
DQ Nicola Rodigari (ITA)
Men's 1000m medalists: Lee (silver), Ahn (gold), Kim (bronze)

Being the lone non-Korean in this race was sort of a losing proposition, and having skated in the repechage to get this far, Rodigari had a lot of extra laps in his legs by the time he got to this final. One of the Korean skaters did appear to open the door for him and Rodigari moved into 3rd, but he made a poor pass and was dq'ed for impeding on Kim. In the final half-lap as Ahn and Lee were battling it out for the win it looked for a second like they might take each other out as they jockeyed for position.
Marc-Andre Monette was 2nd in the men's B final.

500m #2 finals - gold and bronze for Canada!
Men's A final
1. Charles Hamelin (CAN) - 41.511 39.975 (yes, we are questioning that time!)
2. Ze Hu (CHN) - 41.599
3. Jeff Scholten (CAN) - 41.612
4. Kyung-taek Song (KOR) - 41.758
5. Junji Ito (JPN) - 41.855
Men's 500m #2 medalists: Hu (silver), Hamelin (gold), Scholten (bronze)

Charles and Jeff skated 1-2 the whole way but Hu just edged Jeff at the line by a few thousandths, it looked like... [update] So the world record wasn't in fact shattered in stunning fashion just now, although it took a long time to get official results/times. (When they flashed the results on the scoreboard here in the arena they initially showed the skaters as having gone under 40 seconds in the final.)
Women's A final
1. Meng Wang (CHN) 43.953
2. Evgenia Radanova (BUL) 44.035
3. Ji-soo Jeon (KOR) 44.162
4. Min-jung Kim (KOR) 44.204
Women's 500m #2 medalists: Radanova (silver), Wang (gold), Jeon (bronze)

This race was practically over as soon as it began! Try getting around Wang and Radanova in the 500m...

Team USA skater results catchup - day 3
Note: Refresh the page for updates from the afternoon's World Cup session which I'm adding to what I posted from this morning's repechage round. I'm commenting on Canadians' results in the comments as I can also.
Men's 500m #2 - Repechage Final A
1. Haonan Li (CHN)
2. Jordan Malone (USA)
3. Denis Bellotti (ITA)
DQ Satoshi Sakashita (JPN)
Women's 500m #2 - Repechage Final A
1. Anne Maltais (CAN)
2. Mara Zini (ITA)
3. Katerina Novotna (CZE)
DQ Yuka Kamino (JPN)
Cyberscoreboard is up and down but you can find results on the official World Cup #3 web site.
Ryan Bedford - Ryan was disqualified in his 1000m repechage heats this morning.
Kimberly Derrick - Kimberly skated her way through the 1000m repechage rounds to the A final, where she finished 4th. [update] Kimberly finished 3rd in a fast-paced 1000m quarter final behind Kalyna Roberge and Mile Zhu, so she won't move on to the semis.
Sarah Lang and Kimberly Derrick compete in the 1000m repechage A final

Alex Izykowski - Skating in this afternoon's World Cup round of the 1000m. [update] In his 1000m quarter, Alex wasn't really able to get anything going and it was the Lee-Li show with Korea and China getting the top 2 spots.
Lezleigh Jaworski - Will skate in today's World Cup round of 500m #2. [update] Lezleigh made it into the 500m semi finals after two skaters in front of her fell in the quarter final race during the final lap. In her 500m semi, both Lezleigh and the German skater Susanne Rudolph spun out approaching the first turn and the race was restarted. Lezleigh then finished 6th in her semi.
Travis Jayner - Joins Izy in the World Cup 1000m this afternoon. [update] Man, there was a ton of passing in Travis's 1000m quarter final. Travis crossed the line in 2nd but unfortunately was disqualified for impeding on the Netherlands. Crud!
J.P. Kepka - Skating in this afternoon's World Cup round of 500m #2. [update] A bit of a disaster for J.P.- he was dq'ed in his quarter final for skating inside the blocks. He had been in 2nd behind China's Ze Hu and was trying to take the lead with an inside pass on the straightaway. J.P. misjudged his room though and skated inside the blocks. Star announcer Dany Lemay gave him some well-deserved props for sacrificing his chances in order to avoid the contact that would have otherwise resulted from the failed pass.
Sarah Lang - Sarah also skated in the 1000m repechage this morning and placed 3rd in the A final.
Charles Ryan Leveille - He hit a block and fell in his 500m #2 repechage heat this morning so did not move on.
Jordan Malone - Jordan coasted through the repechage rounds of the 500m #2 this morning till running into difficulty into the A final due to interference by a Japanese skater, who was subsequently disqualified. This moved him up to 2nd in the A final, which qualifies Jordan to move on to the World Cup rounds of the 500m #2 later today. [update:] Jordan was in 3rd in his quarter final and looking to try to set up a pass heading into the final lap when he lost his edge and crashed. Earlier in the race, German Robert Seifert had been leading and also crashed, foot-first and head-first in the pads. He's being taken off the ice in a stretcher so let's hope he's not too badly hurt.
