Milwaukee Journal Sentinel | Olympians taking long, short view

Jimmy Jang, the United States' national short track speed skating coach, uses an old Korean proverb to explain why no U.S. skater has ever been able to make the difficult crossover between long track and short track at the Olympic Games.

"There are words for it in Korean," said Jang. "If you try to catch two bunnies, you lose two bunnies."

At least, that has is where the conventional wisdom in the debate has come down. But at least two skaters, Charles Ryan Leveille and Shani Davis, want to prove that it is possible to be Olympic-caliber skaters in both disciplines.

It's short track time again!

American Cup 1 gets underway tomorrow at the Pettit in Milwaukee. This meet will determine which skaters represent the USA at the first two World Cups of the season next month in China and South Korea.

Jordan Malone and Travis Jayner training
060928b.jpg

The competition to make the team is wide open right now in a way it hasn't been in years. The most experienced skaters are absent from this meet -- Rusty Smith is (unofficially) retired, Apolo Ohno and Alex Izykowski are not competing. J.P. Kepka and Anthony Lobello are the only Torino men's team members in Milwaukee.

It's a similar situation with the women, with Halie Kim out (due to a combination of school and injury), Caroline Hallisey retired, Allison Baver and Maria Garcia both not competing, which leaves Kimberly Derrick as the only Torino returnee for the women.

So who IS competing? Lots of people! The biggest name in Milwaukee is of course Shani Davis, who returns to short track after his amazing long track season in 2005-06. There's a small Colorado Springs crew of J.P., Ryan Bedford, Travis Jayner, Tina Koenig and Jordan Malone, plus the 16 or so skaters training in Marquette this season, including Kimberly and Anthony (full list here).

I understand that the only SoCal representative is Lezleigh Jaworski.

Best of luck to all the skaters this weekend!
