What do short trackers do in summertime? They inline!

Especially ones who started out as inliners:

United States Olympic Education Center short track speedskaters turned in their blades for wheels, finishing in the top six at the St. Paul Inline Marathon Sunday in St. Paul, Minn. The 26.2-mile race drew approximately 2,500 of the world’s top inline skaters.

USOEC athletes and 2006 Olympians Kimberly Derrick and Anthony Lobello placed fourth in the pro elite women and men’s divisions, respectively. Derrick clocked 1:23:26.0 and Lobello 1:08:19.5. USOEC teammate Kyle Carr skated into sixth in the men’s pro elite division at 1:08:21.6.

Lobello, who is an Inline World Championships gold medalist, used the competition to get back into the sport after taking a hiatus to focus on short track speedskating. His performance boosted his confidence. “I’m happy with how things turned out,” said Lobello. “I haven’t competed on inlines in four years and only people on the World Team finished ahead of me.”

Derrick and Carr have remained active in inline skating, grabbing third and 12th, respectively, at the marathon last year. Like Lobello, Derrick has made a name for herself in the sport by winning gold at the Inline World Championships prior to coming to the USOEC in 2002.

Canadian short trackers Olivier Jean and Steve Robillard finished 5th and 9th, respectively.
