Short trackers at the White House

Scripps Howard | Bush honors U.S. Winter Olympians

Gold-medal winning short track speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno flew from Los Angeles, where he has been working on a myriad of promotional and business opportunities. Ohno said he would never miss any chance to come to the White House with his teammates.
"This is unbelievable," said Ohno. "I haven't seen a lot of these guys and girls since the Games. (It's great) to be able to come as one team representing the United States and be acknowledged that the Americans were watching."

Will he or won't he?

As yet no clear answer to the question that's on everyone's mind!

USA Today | Ohno seeks to stay in the Olympic limelight

Apolo Anton Ohno plans on being at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The question is in what capacity — short-track speedskater or another role?

"I don't know what I'll do. I'm looking for some kind of a sign to point me on which path to go. That's what I'm looking for right now."
"To get one more medal, regardless of color, that would statistically make me soar above the rest," he says. "I don't skate for that reason, but it's there."
"The next four years of my life are very important. There are a lot of things I want to do. I want to finish school. There are a lot of business ventures I want to pursue. It's a question if I want to dedicate my life again, to go back to living the kind of lifestyle necessary."

[update] All best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery to the great Dean Rutz, who was injured in a freak accident while on assignment for the Seattle Times recently.

I had the great good fortune of meeting Dean and renewing an acquaintance with the equally great Seattle Times columnist Ron Judd while in Torino and can't say enough about their kindness and professionalism, not to mention the unparalleled coverage they've provided of Apolo over the years. Dean and Ron couldn't have been nicer about taking this poor, homeless (and clueless!) blogger under their wings at the Winter Games! Get well soon, Dean!!

Here's a photo of Apolo by the awesome Dean Rutz that I don't remember seeing before!

Olympians visit Washington, DC this week

America's Winter Olympic team will make its traditional Washington, DC/White House visit this week. As far as I know, Apolo and the entire U.S. short track team will take part in the visit.

The White House visit is scheduled for the morning of Wednesday, May 17. On Tuesday, a number of athletes will address local students as part of the Champions in Life program at area high schools. Four years ago, Apolo was one of the athletes who took part. This year short trackers Rusty Smith and Maria Garcia are on the schedule.

That same day the athletes will visit Congress for a luncheon hosted by the Speaker of the House.
