Katie Marquard Resigns
There is big news out of Cleveland:
US Speedskating | USS Executive Director Katie Marquard Resigns
As we've seen, USS faces a lot of challenges and with a new board in place this is a good time to make other changes as well. Considering USS is located in Cleveland because of Katie, I'd look for the organization to relocate at some point.
Katie's resignation takes effect Aug. 31. All best wishes to her in her new endeavors!

Skaters sure do clean up good...
Caro in Montreal emailed me this newspaper photo of Francois-Louis Tremblay. Canada's Olympic short trackers were recently awarded medals by the Quebec Prime Minister and National Assembly for their outstanding performances.

According to Caro, the newspaper reported that the skaters were 'unrecognizable in their gowns and tuxedos', but it's no secret to anyone who's been to a banquet that skaters clean up nice - real nice!

Short Track Jeopardy!
MT swears she was only partially procrastinating from her studies when she put her considerable imagination to use in creating this interactive Jeopardy-style short track quiz. Very clever job she did -- I can say with certainty, it's the first time I've ever enjoyed viewing a Powerpoint file.
Download it and test your knowledge of all things Apolo and short track related!

Short track, safety and the law
Former U.S. national short track skater and double Olympic medalist Nicole Ziegelmeyer had her lawsuit against the USOC dismissed last week.
Because she skated in the 90s, I'd only barely heard Ziegelmeyer's name before and never knew of her suit or spinal injury till the news came that her suit was dismissed last week: Law.com | Panel Rules Hurt Olympic Skater Assumed 'Inherent Risk' of Sport
This is a lengthy article from a specialty law journal - less about short track than about case law - but I wanted to post it up because readers who will be interested might otherwise miss it.

Update on Apolo and Nikkei Concerns
We first posted about this wonderful event last fall -- here's an update:
Olympic Gold Medalist Apolo Anton Ohno Hosts June 4th Fundraiser for Nikkei Concerns: “An Evening with Apolo Anton Ohno†to benefit community elders
Olympic Gold Medalist Apolo Anton Ohno, and his father, Yuki Ohno, will host An Evening with Apolo Anton Ohno, an exclusive reception and dinner on Sunday, June 4th, 2006. This will be Ohno’s first visit to his hometown of Seattle since his Gold and Bronze medal performances in short track speed skating at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.
Ohno served as the Honorary Chair for the Nikkei Concerns’ 30th Anniversary Auction in October 2005 which was attended by more than 900 guests and raised nearly $400,000. Ohno opened the event with a videotaped greeting and added to the excitement of the auction by contributing a private dinner for 30, hosted by him and his father Yuki. Due to overwhelming response to the dinner, which has already sold out, Ohno has added a pre-dinner reception for 200 guests, to thank the community and further support Nikkei Concerns. Nikkei Concerns is a leading non-profit serving elders in the Japanese American and Asian Pacific American community.
A Seattle native, Ohno is an avid supporter of Nikkei Concerns and visited residents of the organizations’ skilled nursing facility, Seattle Keiro, last spring. Ohno’s respect for the elderly grew from his close relationship with his grandparents in Japan. “I've always had a wonderful and rich relationship with my grandparents†said Ohno. Like my father, Yuki, they always supported me in mind and spirit.†He added, “respect for the elderly is in my blood, which is why I loved my Ji-chan (grandfather) and love my O-bachan (grandmother) so much.†The respect is mutual as many of the elder residents and program participants served by Nikkei Concerns are sports enthusiasts who cheered him on during his Olympic competitions.
The event will be held at Carnegie’s Restaurant and Bar, 2026 NW Market Street, Seattle. The private dinner for 30 guests will be preceded by a reception for 200 from 5-7pm. The reception is $150 per person for adults; $75 for children under 18 (the private dinner is sold out). Guests will enjoy fine wine and hors d’oeuvres and the chance to meet Ohno, his father Yuki and other notable community leaders. For reservations, please contact Darcia Tanabe at (206) 726-6550 or email at darciat@nikkeiconcerns.org.
