World Junior Short Track Championships Day 2

Great day for the Canadian women!

It's another long day of racing in Serbia, with skaters contesting the 500m and relay quarter and semi finals.

The U.S. women had strong performances, as Maria Garcia, Jade Wheeler and Carly Wilson all advanced through the preliminaries and heats to reach the quarterfinals. Garcia alone made it to the semis where she finished last in her heat against a Chinese, a Korean and a Canadian.

With less experience, the American men were eliminated in the early rounds -- Jordan Hinke finished 3rd in his prelim. Bobby Joe Lindsey and Kyle Carr moved on to the heats, where both skaters finished 3rd.

The story of the day was the Canadian women and the Chinese men. Rising star Kalyna Roberge dominated the 500m today, winning every race during 4 rounds of qualifying and clinching gold in the final. Her teammated Jessica Gregg took bronze, with Korean Sun-Young Park winning silver.

On the men's side, Chinese skaters Liang Cui and Quinyu Zhao took 1st and 2nd in the 500m respectively, with Korean Ho-suk Lee 3rd.

The relay results weren't yet in as of this writing, but pity the guys, who must skate both quarterfinal and semifinal relays today. Looked like the quarterfinals will have 5 teams on the ice at once. Sounds like a recipe for mayhem! Bet the juniors are awfully glad they only have to skate 2000m.

[UPDATE] The U.S. women finished 2nd in their relay semifinal to advance to tomorrow's final against China, Korea and Canada. The U.S. men skated 2nd in today's quarterfinal. The guys subsequently finished 3rd in their semi, so unfortunately, they won't skate in tomorrow's relay final, where the Canadians will face Japan, China and Korea.

World Junior Short Track Championships

Junior Worlds began today in Belgrade, Serbia. Representing the United States on the women's side are Maria Garcia, Carly Wilson and Jade Wheeler. The men's team consists of Kyle Carr, Jordan Hinke and Joey Lindsey*. There are a LOT of skaters competing there with even South Africa and Mongolia fielding skaters.

There are some key differences between Junior Worlds and senior-level ISU competition. Like with World Cups, 3 men and 3 women skate the individual distances of 500m, 1000m and 1500m (for the U.S., anyway). The top men and women skate a 1500m superfinal (rather than 3000m). Men's and women's relay teams both skate 2000m relays. There are undoubtedly other differences I'm not aware of!

No Americans skated in the 1500m final today, though Garcia and Wheeler both made it to the semis, where they finished 3rd and 5th in their races, respectively. Among the men, Lindsey and Carr were eliminated in quarter finals. Both relay teams advance to tomorrow's semifinals. (Cyberscoreboard shows a relay quarterfinal plus semis and a final for the men's relay; I can't work out the logistics of that one.)

The Korean women swept the medals in the 1500m; the Korean men got gold and bronze but Mathieu Giroux was able to sneak in to grab silver for Canada in a final that set a new world junior record time of 2:13.340. Canadian Kalyna Roberge just missed the podium with her 4th place finish.

*Note: Joey Lindsey replaces Ryan Bedford, who won the U.S. Junior Championships last month in Marquette. Ryan evidently broke his kneecap in a training accident last week, on the heels of a severe bicep laceration he reportedly suffered earlier this season. Best wishes to Ryan for a speedy recovery!

Grabbing the bucket...

Last month someone told a story of Apolo grabbing a bucket from Bridie and Allison to take over ice maintenance duties in Madison - these shots capture that moment, courtesy of SusanG.

Blast from the past: 1999 Boy's Life article

Many thanks to Linde for locating and scanning this article, which appeared 5 years ago this month, in the January 1999 issue of Boys' Life magazine.

Apolo was just 16 in January 1999. He had recently bounced back from the disappointment of his 16th place finish in the 1998 Olympic Trials and was about to win the 1999 Junior Worlds. The rest, as they say, is history.
