USS Announces Coaching Hires
U.S. Speedskating Names Riedy, Jang as New Coaches
USS announced today that it has hired Adam Riedy (who coached at the USOEC program last year with Scott Koons) as the Eastern Regional Development Coach. Jimmy Jang takes over Adam's former position as the Assistant Short Track/Special Projects Coach at the U.S. Olympic Education Center in Marquette, Michigan.
Jang hails from Korea where he was on the national short track team from 1985-1990 and was the head coach for the Korean national team from 1990-1994.
Most recently, as founder and head coach of the Wheaton Ice Speed Skating Club in Maryland, Jang was responsible for promoting a high standard of excellence in academics, sports and lifestyle for students with professional aspirations in short track speed skating.
(In my brief, undistinguished and abortive short track career two summers ago, I was lucky enough to have Jimmy as one of my coaches at the Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD.)

Site maintenance update
Hey everyone... the software upgrade is now complete. Thanks for your patience!
Old comments are now available for the most part. Some of the archive pages are missing comments, however. This is an unfortunate side-effect of the migration process. While Movable Type is powerful software, it has trouble handling a site as huge as OZ, particularly our 44,200+ comment database. It was impossible to migrate all the data in one go and some of it got lost as a result. (It's all backed up on my hard drive, but I don't know how to extract the missing comments and get them onto the new OZ.)
The new software allows for user registration in order to post comments. For now we have not enabled this feature and you can post comments as you always have. However, as we move closer to 2006, we intend to require user registration in order to avoid, or at least minimize, problems such as we experienced last fall with the Korean haters.
The category listing on the right is new. Some of the links are not enabled because it will take a while to go through 3,200+ entries we've made and assign them to categories. We're open to suggestions for categories, so feel free to email me your ideas. Still learning how this feature works!
In the meantime, you can still access the full 2 1/2 years of archives using the weekly archive links. You may notice some weirdness in how some archived content looks, also a result of the data migration. I think we need an intern to go through and fix it. :-P
This is just the software upgrade. For now, OZ utilizes a standard Movable Type template (I applied the familiar colors to it!). A site redesign is also in the works but it couldn't take place till the software upgrade was complete.
For now, links to additional content like inteviews and photo galleries, plus links to external sites, are unavailable. All content will be restored when the site is redesigned. Until now, you can access much of it through the OZ search on the right.

Cleveland 500m men's semifinal
Here's the latest Cleveland race clip from Sue (video), Sonia (editing) and Maggie (hosting). Enjoy!
Here's Bernadette's description of the race, originally posted in March:
Apolo Ohno was in the first semi, up against Mike Kooreman, J.P. Kepka, and Anthony Lobello Jr. Apolo led right from the start, followed by Mike and Anthony (at this point, J.P. had fallen). This was pretty much it for the rest of the race, though with 2 laps to go, Apolo has picked up the pace, and the others had followed suit. Mike and J.P. were both DQ'ed for cross-tracking.
