Seatte PI.com article
Seattle Post Intelligencer | Ohno a Model of Health
Great article today about Apolo, his training lifestyle of 'commitment and denial', along with the news that he's shot new commercials that will air in the Seattle area. (These must be what he referred to in his recent interview!)
Ohno has shot two commercials for Group Health urging people to exercise vigorously at least three times a week. Each spot features Ohno exercising with a Group Health physician, the point being you don't have to be an Olympic champion to enjoy the benefits of regular exercise. They are not the most polished pieces of advertising ever foisted on the viewing public, but the low-budget feel is no fault of Ohno's. He does his part -- riding a bike and gliding on in-line skates -- flawlessly. If more commercials are in the future, Group Health might want to give Ohno a speaking role. At 22, he has fledged into a thoughtful, articulate speaker with plenty to say. Ohno said he'd welcome the chance.
Apolo talks again about the possibility of competing in Vancouver in 2010:
"If I'm healthy and still have the love I have for training and pursuing my goals," he said, "I might be there. I would be a veteran," he acknowledged, "but by then I could bring my old-man strengths. Experience plays a huge role."

Alex Izy Fundraiser
'Keep the Dream Alive' Fundraiser for Alex Izykowski
Alex Izykowski's family and Bay County Speed Skating are holding a fundraiser to help Alex finance his Olympic dreams, with a sunset river cruise on July 22 in Bay City. For anyone able to attend in person, this promises to be a fun event (it's organized by the Izykowskis, after all)!
For those unable to attend, donations are being accepted by mail. Donate $10 or more, and you will receive an Izy '06 T-shirt signed by Alex. All net proceeds go towards the cost of funding Alex's training, travel and equipment costs.
Details on the cruise and how to donate to Alex's cause are available on the Bay County Speed Skating Club web site: http://www.baycountyspeedskatingclub.com/

SLC WC Photo
This is a great photo I came across some time ago, and I don't think it was ever posted here. Taken at the Salt Lake World Cup in February 2003.

Dream Team Contest Results
'Guess Apolo's Dream Team' Contest Results
There was one clear winner of the 'Guess Apolo's Dream Team' contest. The ONLY entry to receive a perfect score was Sonia's, and for her dream team selection expertise she will receive her own ST Gear hoodie. Congratulations, Sonia! (I think a lot of people may want to consult you before placing their bets at next fall's World Cup in Vegas...)
Everyone guessed well overall, with all entries scoring 50% or higher. Interestingly, people had an easier time picking Apolo's dream women's team than his men's team. Four people successfully picked all member's of Apolo's women's team; only Sonia correctly guessed all 4 men on Apolo's men's team. 100% of the entries correctly chose Eun-kyung Choi to be on the women's team. The most-frequently guessed skater NOT on Apolo's dream team? Amelie Goulet-Nadon.
Thanks to all who played!
