Kim Dong-sung Gets Back on Track
Korea Times: Kim Dong-sung Gets Back on Track
"Short-track speed skater Kim Dong-sung is scheduled to return to the rink at an event next month after a year and a half absence.
"The event will mark the first time Kim will compete since hanging up his skates after experiencing friction with the coaching staff of the national team in April.
"Kim clashed with national team coach Kim Ki-hoon after the Nagano Olympic double gold medallist was included in the six-man national squad upon the recommendation of the Korea Skating Union (KSU) even though he didn’t take part in the qualifiers in March.
" 'His aim is to ready himself for the 2006 Winter Olympics,’’ Kim’s manager Jen Seung-chul said. ``The medal itself is not important at this time. More important for him now is to recover his game shape because he only began practicing two months ago.' "

AAO USS Athlete of the Year
Rodriguez, Ohno Named U.S. Speedskating's 2003 Athletes of the Year
"COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO., January 13, 2004 – Ohno won his second career World Cup title in February, earning 196 points out of a possible 200 during the season. He had a hand in 12 of the 13 short track medals won by the U.S. during the 2003 calendar year, winning 10 individual medals (3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze), and two relay medals (one silver and one bronze). Ohno won his fifth U.S. National Short Track Championship in March in Bay City, Mich., and set American records in all four distances during 2003: 500-meters (Oct. 11), 1000-meters (Oct. 26), 1500-meters (Oct. 24), and 3000-meters (Dec. 7). In February, he was named a finalist for the Amateur Athletic Union's James E. Sullivan Memorial Award which recognizes the top amateur athlete in the nation." Full article

2004 Jr Worlds, Day 3
2004 Junior World Championships, Day 3
Junior Worlds wrapped up today in Beijing with the 1000m, 1500m superfinal and relay finals. Americans skated in the 1000m only, as the 1500m is similar to the 3000 at the senior level and is reserved for the top 8 skaters, while both US relay teams were knocked out of contention on Saturday in the semis.
1000: Koreans dominated the 1000m with both the ladies and men taking the top 2 spots.
1000 final results:
1 KANG, Yun-Mi (KOR) 34pts
2 HUR, Hee-Been (KOR) 21pts
3 BORODULINA, Tatiana (RUS) 13pts
DQ JUNG, Eun-Ju (KOR) DQ 0pts
1 KWON, Ki-Deok (KOR) 34pts
2 LEE, Ho-Suk (KOR) 21pts
3 CONFORTOLA, Yuri (ITA) 13pts
4 GAUVREAU, Mathieu (CAN) 8pts
Once again, American Hyo-Jung Kim finished 5th in the 1000m. Teammates Kristen Biondo and Jade Wheeler were eliminated in their respective heats. On the men's side, Nick Frank and Anthony Lobello failed to advance out of the preliminaries (Lobello was DQ'ed for impeding on a French skater), while Ryan Bedford was eliminated in the heats.
1500 Superfinal: Korea's Eun-ju Jung established a new world record of 2:18.861 in this distance (ladies).
Relays: Unsurprisingly, both relays were won by the Korean squads.
Overall standings (things that make you go 'hmmm'): Defending junior world champ Ho-suk Lee easily won gold earlier this weekend in the 1500 and 500 but unaccountably finished 2nd to teammate Ki-deok Kwon twice today in the 1000 and 1500 superfinal. It appears this was pre-arranged to ensure that Kwon would earn enough final points to finish #2 overall for the competition. Lee's overall victory was all but assured and he didn't need first-place points. Prior to today, Kwon had only a silver in the 1500m and had finished 16th in the 500, while Great Britain's Jon Eley had been in contention for 2nd overall heading into yesterday's action with a 13-point advantage over Kwon. It seems that by finishing second, Lee helped Kwon find a way to make up those points.
Seems like a similar fate befell Canada's Anouk Leblanc-Boucher in the ladies' overall standings.
Overall standings:
1 KANG, Yun-Mi (KOR) 76
2 JUNG, Eun-Ju (KOR) 68
3 HUR, Hee-Been (KOR) 42
4 LEBLANC-BOUCHER, Anouk (CAN) 39
9 KIM, Hio-Jung (USA) 5
18 WHEELER, Jade (USA) (97)
25 BIONDO, Kristen (USA0 (76)
1 LEE, Ho-Suk (KOR) 110
2 KWON, Ki-Deok (KOR) 89
3 ELEY, Jon (GBR) 39
4 GAUVREAU, Mathieu (CAN) 21
32 BEDFORD, Ryan (USA) (53)
33 LOBELLO, Anthony (USA) (52)
43 FRANK, Nick (USA) (29)
