OZ Group Photo in B'more

After Apolo signed the last autograph, he came to pose for the requisite OZ group shot.

Apolo and OZ group in Baltimore
l-r: Jennifer G., Noelle, Mel, Linda M., this Apolo guy who insisted on being in every photo today, Denise (?), Crash, Monica, Monique (aka BUTTA!)

Unfortunately, the zoom was on and the photographer didn't tell me people got cut out of the frame. :(

A few interesting tidbits off the top of my head:

- Apolo mentioned that even now he is training 6-7 hours a day and is doing a lot of outdoor workouts. He mentions that in summer he likes to work out on the beach when he can (sand makes for a tough workout!).

- One girl asked Apolo how he plans to celebrate his upcoming 21st birthday. He mentioned that he originally planned to spend it with his family in Japan, but those plans changed, so he'll now spend it either in LA or NYC.

- The emcee mentioned Apolo's sex symbol status. Apolo said he didn't know about being a sex symbol. The guy insisted. Apolo resisted, saying he didn't know what he was supposed to say to that. Someone in the audience shouted, 'Say yes!' and the emcee said he should just say yes. So Apolo said, 'Yes!' with a laugh, looking like he hoped they would then move on to a new topic. (I have a clip pf this!)

- Apolo had an absolutely hilarious little monologue going on about his soul patch (I have a clip of this, too!).

Apolo in Baltimore - Nesquick

Strawberry quick

Someone brought Apolo a gift of strawberry Quick. A moment before this shot, when Apolo first saw the bottle, he threw back his head and laughed. So did we! And missed the shot.

Crash's Baltimore Report

Apolo Crashes Into History, Bawlmer Style
(i.e., Crash's Report from Baltimore)

Crash and Apolo in Baltimore
Crash and Apolo

Crash Gets Punked by Apolo

Now sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip.
That started from Baltimore, aboard the Health Expo ship.
Five passengers set sail that day, for a three-hour tour, a three-hour tour.
The interview started getting rough,
The assembled crowd was star-crossed.
If not for the fearless OZ crew,
The Q & A would be lost; the Q & A would be lost.
The interview took ground on the shore of Pratt Street,
With Crash, and Noelle too,
Denise B. and B-more Monica,
The Butta too,
Here on Health Expo Isle.

FBI Dossier- File # 152187

The following was observed on Friday, May 9, 2003 at the Baltimore Convention Center during the Question and Answer period with one Apolo Anton Ohno, by the assigned undercover agents and is believed to warrant further surveillance:

Interviewer: Anyone have a question for Apolo? Yes, you. State your name and where you’re from, please.

Crash: Hi, Apolo. I’m Crash. I’m from just down the street in Fell’s Point. Have you ever checked out that part of the city?

Apolo: Oh, yeah. Take the water taxi. I know it.

Crash: Well, as you know Kim Dong-Sung has recorded his own rap CD…

Apolo: What?! He what?

Crash: You didn’t know that? Yeah, check out Kazaa, I’m sure it’s on there. Not that I, in any manner, advocate the illegal downloading of music…

Interviewer: (Unintelligible baiting of Ms. Crash, trying to get her to repeat that she illegally downloads music. She is apparently hip to this maneuver and does not fall for it.)

Crash: If you were to record your own rap CD, what would your MC name be?

Apolo: My MC name? I really have no rap skills at all…uh, I don’t know.

Crash: I don’t believe that for a second. If you don’t come up with a name, I’ll come up with one for you…

At this point Ms. Crash became indignant, placing her hands on her hips and tapping her foot. Apparently sensing that security was about to wrestle her to the ground, she stepped away from the microphone.

Dutch Short Track

Dutch Short Track Loses Head Coach

It seems like the U.S. short track program is not the only one losing a popular and respected coach for inexplicable reasons. Worldshorttack.com has a fascinating letter from a Dutch short track skater:

"It seems like the [Dutch] federation does not care a lot about shorttrack. They will not extend [head coach] Yves Nadeau's contract for next year... Yves is one of the most wanted coaches in the world. And our federation sends him away! As you hear it is a weird situation, and that is so frustrating for the athletes." Click for more

Open Letter to the USOC

Saturday Update: **Coming Soon**
Stand by for the petition (it's coming!) as well as a great site Joanna has put together to collect links to the petition and more info, plus special message boards....

Open Letter to the USOC - Stand Up for Short Track

Apolo and his teammates in Colorado Springs are fighting hard for themselves right now. The team has taken its grievances to the USOC in an effort to persuade US Speedskating to put the athletes and their needs first.

Apolo has made available a letter that he wrote to the USOC last week on behalf of himself and his teammates in Colorado Springs. They want the fans and the public to understand what they are up against, and this letter lays it all out very well.

We commend Apolo and his teammates for fighting the good fight. There is more to come, including a new petition, on how we can show them our support.
