COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) announced today the recipients of the December 2002 Athlete and Team of the Month awards. Earning the honor among the athletes were male speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno and female water polo player Brenda Villa. The Junior Women’s National Softball Team was awarded Team of the Month honors. Ohno (Seattle, Wash.) captured two overall men’s short track World Cup titles in December. On Dec. 1, he cruised to the St. Petersburg World Cup overall title with a second-place finish in the 1000-meters and a first-place finish in the 3000-meters. On Nov. 29, the opening day of the three-day event, Ohno grabbed the 1500-meters title as well. One week later, in Bormio, Italy, Ohno again earned the overall World Cup title. He clinched the title Dec. 8 with a gold medal in the 1000-meters and a silver medal in the 3000-meters. He also won the 1500-meters Dec. 6. At the two December World Cup events, Ohno finished with six gold medals and two silvers.
