United States Olympic Committee Honors Speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno, Water Polo's Brenda Villa and the Junior Women's National Softball Team for December Accomplishments
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) announced today the recipients of the December 2002 Athlete and Team of the Month awards. Earning the honor among the athletes were male speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno and female water polo player Brenda Villa. The Junior Women’s National Softball Team was awarded Team of the Month honors.
Ohno (Seattle, Wash.) captured two overall men’s short track World Cup titles in December. On Dec. 1, he cruised to the St. Petersburg World Cup overall title with a second-place finish in the 1000-meters and a first-place finish in the 3000-meters. On Nov. 29, the opening day of the three-day event, Ohno grabbed the 1500-meters title as well. One week later, in Bormio, Italy, Ohno again earned the overall World Cup title. He clinched the title Dec. 8 with a gold medal in the 1000-meters and a silver medal in the 3000-meters. He also won the 1500-meters Dec. 6. At the two December World Cup events, Ohno finished with six gold medals and two silvers.

Great news:
Apolo Anton Ohno and Derek Parra Among 11 Finalists for AAU James E. Sullivan Memorial Award
An article about Chad Hedrick (the inline skater who made the switch to ice this season) mentions Apolo and gives updates on the winter sports athletes and teams:
"Hello everyone! April and I are selling shirts to support "In Apolo's Name. We are offering our continuing support to the Ronald McDonald House Charities. So why not continue to show our support and get a keepsake at the same time. Please find it in your heart to order a shirt and help RMH continue its work. As always if you have any questions please shoot me some email. I'd be happy to answer anything I can! Thanks again!"
